Text Box: Know Your Risk!
By Colleen Grossner, MS, RD

Osteoporosis is the often preventable, and therefore all too common, condition of decreased bone mass.  When you lose bone mass, you are more likely to break a bone when you fall because your bones have literally become fragile.
Various characteristics increase the likelihood of osteoporosis and knowing your risk is half the battle!  Women, especially Asians and Caucasians are at risk.  After menopause, risk for women escalates, and men over fifty are surprisingly vulnerable.  Moreover, small-boned people are at risk.  Check now by measuring your wrist circumference; fewer than six inches indicates small frame size.  Those eating diets with little calcium and are at risk for bone loss, since calcium in your bones makes them strong.  In order to benefit most, take your calcium supplement with vitamin D, which promotes calcium absorption in your bones.  Calcium taken alone is deposited in unnecessary and even harmful places in your body, such as on your heart.  Additionally, not getting enough vitamin D, K, or C, or magnesium puts your bone health at risk, not to mention eliciting numerous other health concerns.  Lastly, keep in mind the old saying “use it or lose it!”, and avoid the risk factor of physical inactivity.  Get out in the sunshine to get some vitamin D and some exercise!
